1. Getting a NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal)
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the fundamental 9-digit Portuguese tax identification number. It is required for signing lease contracts, opening a bank account, setting up utilities, and executing any transaction in Portugal.
Non-EU citizens (including Indonesian passport holders) who are not yet resident in Portugal require a official Fiscal Representative (Representante Fiscal) registered with the Portuguese Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira).
2. Obtaining a NISS (Número de Identificação da Segurança Social)
The NISS is Portugal's 11-digit Social Security Number. It is legally mandated for employment contracts, freelance activity (Trabalhador Independente), and accessing the National Health Service (SNS):
- For Employed Staff: Applied by your local employer upon signing a contract.
- For Self-Employed & Entrepreneurs: Filed online directly through the Segurança Social Direta portal with an active NIF.
3. Opening a Portuguese Bank Account
To pay rent and satisfy AIMA residence proof of funds, opening a local SEPA bank account (such as Millennium BCP, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, or Banco CTT) requires:
- Valid passport & Indonesian National ID (KTP).
- Active Portuguese NIF document.
- Proof of Address (Indonesian utility bill or sworn translation).
- Proof of Income / Occupation (employment contract or tax return).
4. AIMA Residence Registration & Appointments
Replacing the former SEF, the AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) oversees all residence permits (D2 Entrepreneur, D7 Passive Income, Student, and Work Residence permits).
Preparing your full document portfolio—including sworn translations of civil certificates, proof of accommodation (Atestado de Residência), and clean police clearance—is vital prior to your scheduled AIMA biometric appointment.
